Pioneering Technology’s new Safe-T-sensor recognized by FEMA PDF Print E-mail

Pioneering Technology Corp. – an “Energy Smart” product innovation company – announced that the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) awarded a $387,848 grant to Ohio University for the purchase of 4,500 Safe-T-sensors for its residence hall rooms.

“The Safe-T-sensors, which retail for about $75 each, will be installed on all microwaves in university housing facilities during the next three to six months. A study by Ohio University Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) based on information provided by the Athens Fire Department (AFD) found that the majority of the fire department's nuisance alarms on campus were caused by burnt food in microwave ovens,” wrote George Mauzy, managing editor of Compass, Ohio University's online news source.

EHS submitted the grant application to FEMA to reduce the nuisance runs to residence halls by a minimum of 75%, said EHS director Joe Adams. The estimated cost of nuisance runs for Athen’s Fire Department is $2,000. The rest of the funds from FEMA will be used for training and education programs for students on the new sensors and general fire safety, said EHS.

The Safe-T-sensor is designed to detect burning conditions within a microwave and to shut the microwave off before it causes a fire or triggers the fire alarm.
