Vol 9. No. 12

Seasons Greetings and All the Best for 2009

The surroundings look familiar, and perhaps I do as well. Yes, I edited Canadian Electronics and its predecessor, Electronics Times, before becoming editor of CE's sister publication, Design Product News.

As an electronics engineering technologist who worked in manufacturing QC and QA for ten years, I've seen the industry on the front lines and in the editor's "cat-bird" seat. The electronics sector has changed dramatically over the years, from how we build prototypes to how microprocessors dominate the landscape.

Change is also coming to Canadian Electronics, starting with the February 2009 issue. We're moving to a more readable, more flexible format that will compliment a revamped Web site that, in turn, will better integrate our print and online content.

Happy Holiday and a Prosperous 2009,

Mike Edwards,
Supervising Editor, Canadian Electronics

FEATURE PRODUCT

Power supply series compresses power density

The TDK-Lambda EFE Series of embedded front-end power supplies are said to deliver industry leading power density, high efficiency, and enhanced reliability. The first products in the range are the 300-watt EFE-300 and the 400-watt EFE-400 single output supplies that deliver 133% peak power capability for 10 seconds and offer an efficiency of up to 90%. The EFE Series employs an 8-bit microcontroller for full digital control of the output and to handle housekeeping routines This brings a 25% parts count reduction to achieve a 45% smaller and up to 56% lighter design when compared to similar recently announced competitive products. Power densities of up to 22W/in3 are achieved under peak load conditions and 16.6W/in3 under continuous loading.
