Telematics Market Get Passing Grade
Just
because the kids are on vacation doesn’t mean the electronics industry
should ignore opportunities in the North American school bus telematics
market.
Increasing concerns over the safety and
security of students, rising fuel prices, increasing overhead
expenditures, and other operational issues have made the incorporation
of school bus telematics systems indispensable. In fact, the telematics
market is primed for growth between 2008 and 2014, according to
analysis from Frost & Sullivan.
North American School Bus Telematics Market finds that the market earned revenues of over US$25.9 million in 2007 and estimates this to reach $109.8 million in 2014.
Currently,
telematics technologies under development aim to facilitate
student/driver monitoring and tracking, vehicle inspections, guideline
compliance, geofencing, back-office automation, vehicle performance
monitoring, maintenance scheduling, remote diagnostics, prognostics,
communications, mobile resource management, and integration through
web- and telecommunication-based applications.
“The
North American school bus telematics market aims to increase market
penetration by developing innovative and cost effective telematics
solutions that meet the unique safety, security and mobile resource
management needs of the school districts and fleets,” says research
analyst Neelu Singh. “Increasing awareness and better understanding of
the productivity and security benefits offered by school bus telematics
are expected to stimulate the market’s growth.”
Furthermore,
several technologies built upon biometrics, RFID, video surveillance,
and other enabling technologies, such as wireless LAN, that support
real-time high-bandwidth data transfer mechanisms necessary for student
and driver monitoring/tracking are being developed. The
commercialization of these technologies and services will enhance the
applicability of school bus telematics as well as bring in the next
wave of adoption.
If you’re keeping abreast of these and other electronics industry trends in Canadian Electronics magazine, then move to the front of the class.

FEATURE PRODUCT
Rack-mounted System for cPCI and VMEbus
A
variable 19” rack-mounted system for cPCI and VMEbus Rittal’s Slim-Box
Vario is for small electronic enclosures. The solution has a
space-saving design with integrated power supply and climate control
functions. The Slim-Box Vario housings are 300 mm deep and designed for
the installation of cPCI, cPCI Express, VME64x boards of 3U, 6U or rear
I/O boards. Thanks to the horizontal arrangement of the equipment,
twice the number of functional components may be integrated on 1, 2, 3
or 4 U (i.e. 2, 4, 6 or 8). Two slots per U are available at the front
and rear. The housings contain a backplane for VME64x or cPCI.

| WEB WATCH
Wireless: The IEEE Communications Society (IEEE ComSoc), the
leading worldwide professional organization dedicated to the
advancement of communications technologies, has launched a Web site at www.ieee-wcet.org
to provide detailed information, ongoing updates and free online
resources highlighting the newly-introduced Wireless Communication
Engineering Technologies (IEEE WCET) Certification Program. Unveiled
earlier this year, the IEEE WCET program was designed by IEEE ComSoc to
aid the global wireless industry’s growing need for qualified
communications professionals with practical experience and advanced
problem-solving skills.
Remote temperature measurement:
Techmatron Instruments announces that Measurement Computing Corp., a
leader in low-cost data acquisition, has released two Web-enabled
temperature input devices, the WEB-TEMP and the WEB-TC, that allow
users to take multiple temperature measurements and monitor them via
the Internet. The products, modeled after MCC’s USB-TEMP and the USB-TC
products, have corresponding performance, but are Ethernet compatible
with built-in Web servers that write temperature data to their own Web
page for immediate Internet access from virtually everywhere.

Semiconductor test: Keithley Instruments Inc., a leader in solutions for emerging measurement needs, announces the availability of the Semiconductor Device Test Applications Guide.
In addition to the Applications Guide, this CD also includes a variety
of semiconductor test application information such as applications
notes, white papers, and presentations that enables users to reduce
their cost of test while simplifying the most challenging applications.
The Semiconductor Device Test Applications Guide is available free of charge at www.ggcomm.com/Keithley/May08PR_SemiAppsGuide.html.
EDA:
EMA Design Automation, one of the world’s largest electronic design
automation value added resellers, has announced that Cadence Design
Systems’ OrCAD Capture CIS customers now have access to the
wealth of engineering data offered in the Digi-Key part database. The
effort is geared at reducing the chance of costly re-spins due to
wrong, obsolete, or non-compliant parts, and the reduction of
administrative overhead involved in validating new part requests.
Having the cost information available also assists in monitoring
product production costs and therefore profitability.
