Internet Security

The growing popularity of the Internet has heralded a new era in which there is a high degree of interconnectivity between different networks. However, this has also increased the opportunity for spreading malicious software and unauthorized access to confidential information.

According to a technical market research report, RG-293 Internet Security from Business Communications Co. Inc. (www.bccresearch.com), the global Internet security market was worth approximately US$27.7 billion in 2005, and is expected to grow at an average annual growth rate (AAGR) of 16.0 % to reach approximately US$58.1 billion by 2010.

During the 2002-2004 period, the market for Internet security products increased at an AAGR of more than 30 %. The market for Internet security is comprised of hardware appliances, software solutions, and services, such as consulting and management of security services. It is expected that, in the near future, the market for Internet security will be driven by the growth in the hardware security appliances segment, which is expected to grow at the fastest rate as compared to the market for software security, which will show a decreasing trend.

Some of the primary technologies in this market include security 3A and identity management, secure control management, firewall, intrusion detection and prevention, and security information management.

The high growth rate of the Internet security market can be attributed to a higher demand for strong security solutions in different market verticals, such as financial services, government installations and healthcare. Amongst these, the financial services industry has been a major contributor in the past and is expected to be the primary employer of Internet security applications till 2010.
